  • Mentoring
  • Mentoring allows for a newer leader to learn from people that have helpful experience and expertise in a particular area (Rampton, 2020).Mentors can help newer leaders through challenging situations by offering advice (Rampton, 2020).
  • Welcome to OCU's Mentorship Program
  • OCU should care about developing servant leaders because servant leadership is taught in the Bible. Matthew 20:26 (ESV) says "It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be a servant." The passage goes on to give an example of the greatest servant leader of all time, Jesus. Matthew 20:28 (ESV) says, "Even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many." Jesus was the greatest servant leader because he served all of humanity by laying down His life for our sins.
  • Growth Mindset
  • Characteristics of Embodying a Growth Mindset
  • -Self Belief-Positivity
  • Grace Crist, Sadie Digon, Kylie Etterling, & Joseph Kessinger
  • -Helping Others- Calculating Risk(Muthoni, 2022)
  •
  • "Individuals who believe their talents can be developed (through hard work, good strategies, and input from others) have a growth mindset" (Dweck, 2016). Being able to be pushed and continue learning is something a person with growth mindset desires.
  • 3 Characteristics of Shared Leadership
  • OCU could implement more communication classes that could be taken at the campus. There are a few options, however, that do not hit all of these points stated above. There are times in business where you have to speak upon more sensitive subjects. They could have a class where you have to interact with another to work on feedback skills and empathy with certain scenarios and use the skills that are harder for people to touch into. Having students work on these skills will allow growth for their business careers and everyday interactions.
  • Collaborating and Sharing Authority of Leadership
  • 1. Ability to express leadership and authority, when necessary.2. Sharing problem-solving with group members without eliminating the topic for a hierarchical approach.3. Creating trust in your relationships with group members
  • Most organizations hold a hierarchical structure leading the leader with all the responsibility. Let's be real, leaders don't know everything, thus, it's important to share your authority with others when it comes to decision-making.
  • OCU could create a mentorship program where students are paired with a faculty member that has experience and expertise in their chosen field. The student could meet on a regular basis with that faculty member and talk about what they are currently experiencing in their chosen field of work. The faculty member could offer advice to the student about how to be a Godly, servant leader in their place of work. This mentorship program could include informal, scheduled conversations as well as consistent communication between the mentor and the student via phone calls, texts, or whatever other form of communication is helpful. The goal would be for the mentor and the student to work closely together.
  • Conclusion
  • OCU should invest in servant leadership because servant leadership is Biblical leadership!
  • OCU using a growth mindset will be vital in the development of new leaders. Adapting to new times and new ways that young people think will allow for successful young leaders. While the university does this it will then inherently coach this concept to the leaders they are developing. This would look like providing classes in social media, communication, and continuing discussion posts that address current issues. Pushing communication in class prepares students/leaders for what is to come in the world.
  • Growth Mindset is vital to having a creative and innovative leadership team. Trying new options and new ways of doing things leads to success.
  • OCU can aid in developing servant leaders by implementing more group-based classes and/or assignments that allow students to be in the leadership position at least once through the semester. The class could implement different scenarios of problem-solving, managerial and hiring-based scenarios and financial exercises. Overall, this will give leaders the experience of making real-life decisions alone or by seeing different points of view from their group members. The more experience and knowledge a leader can gain, the stronger and more confident of a leader they can be.
  • "Decision making is viewed as a shared responsibility where each person or group has a voice and the leader's input is not privileged over others" (Montgomery, 2018).
  • Communication, mentorship, growth mindsets, and collaboration are all ways that OCU can develop modern servant leaders. The development of servant leaders at OCU will require buy-in from both the faculty, staff, and students.
