  • Have you heard? King John raised the taxes again!
  • I know, it's terrible. Just a few days ago, he stole some land from a farmer. We need to do something to stop this.
  • King John was crowned king of England in 1999 CE. Almost right away, he became unpopular with the Church, Barons, and Merchants. He would raise taxes whenever he wanted to, steal land that wasn't his and think of himself as above the law. Soon the barons started to grow restless and came up with a plan.

  • I know! Let's create a document outlining all the rules the King and his kingdom have to follow.
  • This is getting too out of hand, we need to stop this!
  • I agree! We need a plan to get the King to cooperate.
  • The King's demands and actions were getting so out of hand, that the Barons, Bishops and Merchant leaders drew up a document called the Magna Carta (Great Charter). It outlines all the rules that the kingdom had to follow and also specifies that the king must also follow these rules and that he is not above the law.

  • Magna Carta
  • In 1215, the Barons rebelled and negotiated with King John, forcing him to sign the Magna Carta. This historical event is a very important even today, as it marked a significant legal development in England because it required the Monarch to be subject to the will of other and the King was not above the law. This date is also seen and the first step toward legal rights and freedoms for 'the people' and the start of modern democracy.
