- You don't seem to be in a good temper
- You wouldn't be in a good temper if you're in the fix I'm in. I've done the silliest thing ever in my life!!!
- What have you done?
- Came up to London. I thought of staying at the Patagonian Hotel in Berkshire Square
- When I got there I found that it had been pulled down. In the place of a hotel a cinema theatre had come up. The taxi driver took me to another hotel some way off, where I could stay. I at once sent a letter to my people giving them the address . Then I went out to buy some soap-I'd forgotten to pack any and I hate using hotel soap. Then I strolled up a bit, had a drink at a bar and looked at the shops.
- When I turned my steps back to the hotel, I suddenly realized that I didn't remember the name of the hotel or even what street it was in. I have no friends in London. I can write to my people for address but they'll get my letter only tomorrow. Meantime I'm without any money. Came out with shilling in my pocket, which went in buying the soap and the drink. Here I am wandering about with two pence in my pocket and nowhere to go for the night.
- Not at all impossible, I remember doing a similar thing in foreign capital, but on that occasion there were two of us. We remembered, luckily, that the hotel was on the smaller canal and after some research , we found the hotel.
- I suppose you think I 've spun you an impossible yarn
- In a foreign city it wouldn't be difficult. I could go to the consul and get help from him. But here, unless I find a decent chap who would believe my story and lend me some money, I'll have to spend the night on the Embankment
