- Known as movable type printing, this invention by Bi Sheng allows craftsmen to print on paper without the long and inefficient process of the old Chinese way. Instead of carving out a whole block of wood by hand for every print, this method forms words with pre-carved letter blocks. These blocks can be used several times and have a lower risk of expensive mistakes. Books and prints are able to be made with less work with movable type printing.
- Small blocks are carved out of wood and are able to be rearranged to form different words. The blocks needed for the page are put into place and then glued to an iron plate. Ink is then applied all over the blocks and the paper desired to make the print is pressed against them. After that the paper is removed to dry and the blocks are disassembled for later use.
- This invention replaced the old and time consuming Chinese method to make prints and books. Bi Shang’s movable type printing influenced European craftsmen such as Johannes Gutenberg to make similar presses (with their country’s characters and letters). The printing business arguably was started with this and it made books much cheaper and easier to make. Without this creation, printing would not be accessible to everyone and prints would be expensive and harder to make.
