Storyboard Text

  • In the beginning of mitosis in Prophase....
  • In the beginning of mitosis in Prophase, a cell will still have its nucleus. This nucleus will go away at some point of the step but it will come back at the end of mitosis. Prophase is where the cell still has its nucleus.
  • Nucleus?? You're stil here?
  • Yes I am, pal
  • nucleus
  • chromosomes
  • You can also still see the chromosomes. These chromosomes are thick which makes them visible as sister chromatids (in X’s). We say “the chromosomes are condensing.”
  • cell
  • The nucleus slowly disappears Cell prepares for the next stage, "Metaphase."

  • Chromosomes condense
  • Metaphase
  • In Metaphase, these condensed chromosomes are lined up in the MIDDLE of the cell.
  • Don’t remember what a nucleus is? See page 4!
  • When a chromosome is condensing, it means that they are thickening.
  • Anaphase
  • Let’s remember Metaphase as the first step for “m-” meaning the “middle” which will make sense in the next square.
  • SPINDLE APPARATUS?
  • WHAT IS
  • In the second stage of mitosis, the chromosomes are lined up in the middle of the cell. Now let’s remember Anaphase as the third step for “a-” meaning “away” which will make sense in the next square.
  • This is the preparation for the next stage of mitosis called “Anaphase”
  • Remember Anaphase for “AWAY” because the sister chromatids are moving away from each other.
  • When the chromosomes are lined up, in Anaphase, these chromosomes will move AWAY. This will make the sister chromatids separate to the opposite poles of the cell and become their own chromosomes.
  • The chromosomes do not move on their own. They get help from a special structure. See next square to find out!
  • It is important to know that these chromosomes are not separating and moving to the end of the cells by themselves. No.
