I am concerned we are losing the forest for the trees. While abortion access is indeed an immediate concern, the principle of protecting physician autonomy seems to be of much broader import. The bill did not address abortion specifically, but any medical service or procedures which a physician might ethically or religiously object to, broadly. I wish we could think more abstractly. Maybe if there is another such bill, I can discuss ways to present it in a less partisan framework with its author before it hits the floor. There is a common refrain of concern regarding an insidious transition to authoritarianism in our political present. In light of this concern, wouldn't it behoove us to bolster the individual discretion and autonomy of medical professionals in every way possible, both in terms of conscientious objection and conscientious provision? There are numerous examples throughout history of authoritarian regimes systemically pressuring or forcing physicians to choose between maintaining their moral convictions and maintaining their professional roles. Moves to trade away individual autonomy into the hands of legislators tend to be fine and dandy until the politicians in power change for the worse...Maybe I'm just catastrophizing. I should probably eat some lunch.
