- Gretel
- Gretel is Bruno's 13 year old sister. She is German, but lives in Poland with the rest of her family. She is very sarcastic and not always kind towards her brother but never really mean. She is quite the know it all, and at the end of the book she "goes through a phase" and becomes kinda moody and reserved. She spends a lot of her time either in her room rearranging her dolls or moving pins on her map, or flirting with the young lieutenant Kotler. Her family consists of her, her younger brother Bruno, her mother and her father.

- Ralf
- Ralf is the name of Bruno's and Gretel's father, although it does not say so in the book. He fought for his nation, Germany, during World War I and was promoted to commandant by Hitler during World War II. I would guess that he is in early to mid forties. He is very strict and somewhat unaffectionate. He is a big fan of rules, and seems to set down ground rules for almost everything (of importance). Although he doesn't always show it, I believe that he has a deep love for his family, and he really lets that show after his mother dies. He is extremely anti-semitic.

- Maria
- Maria is the family's maid, and is likely in her mid to late twenties. The only family she mentions is her mother, who worked for Bruno's grandmother as a seamstress, and that connection is what got Maria her job. We do not find out what Maria's nationality is, but she is probably German. Maria is shy and if she has opinions on something, she usually keeps them to herself. The only exception we see is when Bruno's calls his father stupid and she contradicts him. she is kind and gentle. She liked to eat her lunch in the garden in Berlin, and watch the bees.
