Cornwallis was trapped by land and sea.He surrendered on October 19, 1781 because he had no way out and no help arrived in time.Effect on the American RevolutionYorktown was the last major battle of the war. After hearing about the defeat, the British government lost support for continuing the war. Parliament voted to end the fighting and begin peace talks. This victory led directly to American independence.
