Storyboard Text

  • Before the Revolution, France was ruled by a king with nobles and the clergy being in higher positions of power. The 3rd estate was forced to pay taxes, despite the 1st and 2nd estate being the ones who owned ~80% of the land. People were unhappy with the way things were running and how disorganized the government was.
  • The Tenis Court Oath was a result of the 3rd estate being barred from attending a meeting determining taxes. This left the 1st and 2nd estate in discussion which was unfair because they were all for raising taxes, seeing as they wouldn't be effected either way. The Tenis Court Oath was the first time the people had publicly stood against the French government and its monarch. This foreshadows the result of the French version of the Declaration of independance, a show of the peoples want for freedom and representation.
  • The storming of the Bastille was one of the first shows of rebellion that started the French Revolution. People wanted to show their anger so they broke into the Bastille and crumbled it to the ground, beheading the soldiers and sticking their heads on pikes. This is now an important holiday to the French, similar to why we celebrate the 4th of July, representing the peoples call to action against the king.
