The clergy was church leaders. They didn't have to pay taxes. They had many privileges
The nobility was nobles. They had to pay some/a few taxes. They owned land. They also had many privileges.
The other people were the common people. They had to pay lots of taxes. They had little power. They didn't normally have any say in the government and law making.
The first estate was the clergy.
THE THREE ESTATES
The second estate was nobility.
The third estate was all of the other people.

France was in very big debt because of the kings spendings. Taxes were requested to be raised but the clergy and nobility shut down that idea. They wanted to raise taxes even though they were already unfair. The poor people paid the most taxes. People were angry and hungry because there wasn't enough food.
This isn't fair! We pay most taxes and we are still left starving! And even that isn't enough! You want to raise the taxes again!

People didn't like Queen Marie Antoinette because she spent a lot of the money.
King Louis XVI had all of the power but he didn't use it to solve the problems.
They couldn't fix any problems and people were getting angry and annoyed.
