  • Buddha left his palace and saw an old man, a sick man, a holy man, and a dead man during his four journeys
  • Buddha sat and meditated under the Bodhi Tree for forty-nine days until he experienced Enlightenment
  • Enlightenment: A state of perfect wisdom where an individual understands the basic truths of the universe
  • Buddha said his first sermon to five companions of his. In this sermon he laid out the Four Noble Truths
  • Four Noble Truths: The four main ideas that Buddha came to understand during his enlightenment
  • The Eightfold Path is introduced with the end goal being Nirvana. Hinduism and Buddhism shared the same idea of reincarnation, however Buddha rejected the Caste System
  • Eightfold Path: A set of steps that that lead to Nirvana.
  • Nirvana: The release from pain and suffering
  • "I am introducing to you the Eightfold Path"
  • Missionaries and Trade helped Buddhism spread greatly. Pilgrimages are carried out in India. A famous site for pilgrimages was the Stupas. 
  • "Have you heard about Buddhism?"
  • "Buddhism is a great religon that I would love to tell you about."
  • Mahayana Buddhism: Teaches that people can help each other find enlightenment.
  • Theravada Buddhism: Oldest tradition, and it says the best way to reach nirvana is to become a monk or nun and spend all time in meditation.
  • After Buddha died three main traditions came to form. Two of the major traditions were Theravada Buddhism and Mahayana Buddhism. Also, Bodhisattvas helped people reach Nirvana.
