One major theme of The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is that "Mankind is its own worst enemy" . For example, when everyone turns against Goodman it causes madness among the Maple Street residents because of false assumptions of him being an alien just because his car turned on by itself. This helps support the theme because just because of other people assuming theres aliens it made everyone think there really was a traitor apon them. Secondly, when Charlie shoots his innocent neighbor Pete Van Horn dead just because of fear of the shadow being an alien and tommy shouting that the unknown figure was an alien. This also supports the theme because just because of everyone's fear they ended up taking an innocent life which then turned into people tunring on Charlie. Finally, when Tommy is accused of being the alien by Charlie since he was the once who brang up the theory of an alien being upon them which then caused everyone to point fingers at eachother, Finally causing the destruction of Maple Street. This helps support the theme because the residents tryed finding any way to point a finger at eachother even though everyone was innocent which caused everyone to eat eachother up alive. In conclusion the theme "Mankind is its own worst enemy" perfectly suits this story because of the many times this them can be brought up throughout this story.
