  • The impact of your community strongly affects the way you live your life and react to things, which can be seen by how communities like Will’s aren’t surprised by shooting and feel obligated to hold their tongues.
  • Will grew up in an community where violence is encouraged as a way of dealing with issues and problems they encounter.
  • Will grew up in a community where violence was the normal thing and even encouraged to solve problems in their society. Reynolds writes "Everybody/ ran,/ ducked,/hid,/tucked/ themselves tight./ Did what we’ve all been trained to." (Reynolds,  10)
  • Will's community has become numb to the idea of death and murder and it has become normal to get back for the murder of someone with another murder. "You can always tell a newbie./ They always ask questions/ like they really expect answers" (Reynolds, 18)
  • On the other hand I grew up in a Catholic Church environment where I was taught to talk out my problems and never result to violence.
  • Both of our communities were influenced by people way before our time and were taught to us when we were very young. "The invention of the rules/ ain’t come from my/ brother,/ his friends,/ my dad,/ my uncle,/ the guys outside,/ the hustlers and shooters,/ and definitely not from me." (Reynolds, 34)
