  • Protective layer
  • Antibiotics kill most bacteria whether it's harmful or helpful so it goes after and kills the helpful bacteria. The MRSA bacteria remains as the bacteria has few pores and a protective layer that shield's it from antibodies making the bacteria hard to kill, so instead the bacteria reproduces causing Addie to feel worse.

  • Addie has gotten even worse, her lungs starts failing and begins to develop boils on her body. She is in serious condition so the hospital gives her a second round of antibiotics.
  • The new round of antibiotics will kill any bacteria it can including the helpful bacteria in her body. The MRSA bacteria will survive due to their few pores and protective layer, so the bacteria keeps reproducing spreading throughout Addie's body causing her to feel worse.

  • Addie's situation shows natural selection as the MRSA bacteria are better adapted to changes in the environment which is the addition of antibodies to kill the bacteria due to few pores and the protective layer which the healthy bacteria had more pores and no protection which lead them to be killed.
  • Inside Addie, Because the helpful bacteria was killed by the antibodies the majority of bacteria are MRSA bacteria.
  • Addie's situation shows evolution as the MRSA bacteria spread and reproduced causing the traits of the bacteria such as its few pores and protective layer to be passed down to the next generation of bacteria which now make up the majority of bacteria.
