The Fugitive Act was passed by Congress to ease building tensions between the North and South. The law stated that any slaves that run away to the North must be returned to the South. The Southern states abused this act though and would capture free black men and sell them into slavery.

In the Dred Scott Case, The Supreme Court ruled that no black man could become a citizen of The United States, which created even more controversy between the North and the South.
Formation Of The Confederate States Of America
John Brown was a violent abolitionist from Kansas, who led a raid on a federal arsenal in West Virginia. Brown's plan was to steal weapons to give to slaves to revolt, but all his accomplices bailed on him and left him to fend for himself. After 2 days he surrendered, and he was hung for treason. The picture above depicts his surrender.
Fort Sumter And The Start Of A War
Abraham Lincoln was the first Republican president elected and was the 16th president of The United States. The voting was very close, not one Southern State voted for him, they went democratic. When Lincoln was elected, the Southerners feared that he would abolish slavery, which led to their departure from the union.

In 1860, South Carolina seceded from the Union. They were followed by Mississippi, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Alabama, and Texas. The leaders of the Confederate States met and drafted their new constitution, and elected Jefferson Davis as president, this is depicted above.
On April 12th, 1861, the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter, which was occupied by the Union in Charleston, South Carolina. After two days of bombing, the Union surrendered the fort to the Confederates. This led to North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia joining the South, and the beginning of the Civil War.
