- Physical/Character Traits:Billy's mama is part Cherokee How does this character interact with the main character? She is very religious and always enjoys answering Billy's questions about God. What challenges does this character face? She worries about him when he is hunting, but is also very proud of him. She wants very much to move to town so the children can get a good education.
- PAPA
- Physical/Character Traits: He is a good and honest farmer. How does this character interact with the main character?Once Billy buys his hounds, he starts to treat Billy like a man. What challenges does this character face? He is poor, but is working hard so his family can move to the city.
- OLD DAN
- Physical/Character Traits: He is one of Billy's red bone coonhounds.He is bigger and stronger than Little Ann, the other hound. How does this character interact with the main character? Old Dan is devoted to Little Ann and to Billy and loves to hunt as a team with them. He will not hunt with any other hunter except for Billy, or with any other hound except for Little Ann. What challenges does this character face? He will never leave a raccoon once he is on its trail, although sometimes his impatience gets the best of him, and he loses the trail.

Little Ann is the most attached to Billy. When he talks to her, she seems to listen to him. And she regularly lovingly licks him. She even extends this love to Billy's family, quickly becoming the favorite dog of his younger sisters. What challenges does this character face?Little Anne is the smaller of the two dogs, but she is still a tough dog. She jumps on the mountain lion and helps kill it, saving Billy. She also endures the freezing night of the hunting competition while other dogs and hunters quit.
