  • Battle of Bull Run - July 21, 1861
  • Battle of Shiloh - Apr. 6, 1862 - Apr. 7, 1862
  • Battle of Antietam - Sept. 17, 1862`
  • The Battle of Bull Run was the first major land battle during the Civil War. This battle took place near the Bull Run River. Citizens near the battle came to watch because they thought just like everyone else that the war was going to end within the first battle. However, the South stayed strong under General Lee and won the battle. This Confederate victory shocked the whole world and showed that the South wasn't going down without a fight
  • Battle of Chancellorsville - Apr. 30, 1863 - May 6, 1863
  • The Battle of Shiloh was the bloodiest battle of the war up to that point in time, and it started when General Johnston lead a sneak attack on Grant and his army. The South seemed to be winning the battle on the first day until Grant unexpectedly came back and kept fighting on the second day, and the battle left the Union victorious with a lot of casualties. This was a tough loss for the South because halfway through the battle Johnston was shot in the leg badly and died. It was also important for the North because they were able to capture the major Railroad crossing Corinth.
  • Siege of Vicksburg - May 18, 1863 - July 4, 1863
  • The Battle of Antietam was the bloodiest battle in United States history. And the victory of this battle would be very crucial to both sides. Lincoln had the Emancipation Proclomation ready and needed one more win to issue it, and General Lee needed the win so that the European allies like France and England would step-in and help the South. Unfortunately, two Union soldiers found a copy of Lee's battle plan's and the Union one the battle, allowing Lincoln to issue the document and permanently exclude Europe from teh war because they didn't want to interfere with anything having to do with slavery.
  • Battle of Gettysburg - July 1-3, 1863
  • The Battle of Chancellorsville was General Lee and Jackson's biggest tactical victory. After General Hooker led his army over the Rappahannock River, Lee strategically split his army to defeat the Union. However, during the battle, Stonewall Jackson was fatally wounded due to "friendly fire".
  • The siege of Vicksburg began when Grant started the Vicksburg Campaign which lasted 47 days. After first losing at Vicksburg, he went back and won a battle at Jackson, and then went back to Vicksburg. After a long siege, Grant and his men won the battle allowing them to gain full control of the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in half.

  • The battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the war and had the most casualties of any Civil War battle. Lee started an attempt to invade the North towards Washington DC, and even with all of the Northern losses, they held their ground and Pushed Lee out of the North. After the victory, the Gettysburg address was given by Abraham Lincoln which defined the purpose of the war.
