- 1. A horse named Duchess gives birth to a horse named Darkie.(Chapter 1)
- 2 years later...
- 2. Darkie is broken in by his master, Old Daniel.(Chapter 3) -end of exposition
- Don't worry.
- It's so uncomfortable! I'm scared.
- 3. Darkie is sold to squire Gordon and is named Black Beauty. The groom, John Manly, and his assistant James are very nice. (Chapter 4)
- You're a fast horse!
- 4. Black Beauty becomes friends with Ginger and Merrylegs.(Chapters 7-9)
- 5. James leaves to be a groom and is replaced by Joe Green.(Chapter 17)
- Good-bye, James!
- 6. There is a fire in a stable away from home, and Jim saves Ginger and Black Beauty.(Chapter 16)
- 7. Black Beauty almost dies after he sprints for too long to get a medicine and then drinks too much water.(Chapter 19)

- 8. Black Beauty and Ginger are sold to Lord W. The grooms name is York.(Chapter 21)

- 16. Alfred Smirk is the new groom, but he doesn't clean the stables so Black Beauty gets "Thrush".(Chapter 31)

- 17. Black Beauty is sold to Jerry, who has a wife named Polly and 2 kids named Harry and Dolly, and is named Jack. (Chapter 33)
- 18. Black Beauty sees Ginger and she is abused and hurt.(Chapter 40)

- 19. Black Beauty's friend, captain, dies in a carriage accident.(Chapter 44)

- 20. Jerry gets sick, so he moves and Black Beauty is sold.(Chapter 46) -end of rising action
- Goodbye, Jack!
- 21. Black Beauty almost dies of overworking.(Chapter 47)-climax

- 22. Black Beauty is sold to an old man and his grandson.(Chapter 48)-falling action
- 23. After Black Beauty is well again, he is sold to 3 ladies permanently. (Chapter 49)-resolution
