- Evolution is the biological study of the evolutionary processes that produced the diversity of life on Earth. A theory that the differences between modern plants and animals are because of changes that happened by a natural process over a very long time.
- To understand the mechanisms of evolution, it's important to know that many traits in organisms have a range of values and there are other mechanisms by which evolution occurs.
- Darwin's theory of evolution states that populations of organisms change over time, and that the main way, or mechanism, by which they change is natural selection.Natural Selection is the process by which plants and animals that can adapt to changes in their environment are able to survive and reproduce while those that cannot adapt do not survive.
- Adaptation is the change or the process of change by which an organism or species becomes better suited to its environment.
- Differential Reproduction is the process in nature by which, according to Darwin's theory of evolution, only the organisms best adapted to their environment tend to survive and transmit their genetic characteristics in increasing numbers to succeeding generations while those less adapted tend to be eliminated.
- Fitness is the genetic contribution of an individual to the next generation's gene pool relative to the average for the population, usually measured by the number of offspring or close kin that survive to reproductive age.
- Mutation: A sudden departure from the parent type in one or more heritable characteristics, caused by a change in a gene or a chromosome.When a gene mutates or changes by accident called mutation, it makes it easier for the animal to survive and to reproduce, and it passes the trait to its offspring.
