- There was a man who had two sons. The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’ So he divided his property between them.
- Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had, set off for a distant country.
- There he squandered his wealth in wild living.
- After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country, and he began to be in need.
- When he came to his senses, he realised that his father's servants had food even when he was starving. He went home to his father to beg for forgiviveness. The father saw his son and ordered the servants to bring the finest clothes and kill the fattest cow.
- Oldest son saw the party and was outraged. He told his father 'I have been working for you for many years and you have never given me anything! Yet when your son who has spent all your money returns home you celebrate!'
- My son,’ the father said, 'you are always with me, and everything I have is yours. But we had to celebrate and be glad, because this brother of yours he was lost and now is found.'
