  • Jane is punished by being put in the isolated and abandoned red room at Gateshead, formerly belonging to Jane's deceased uncle. Jane is forced to inhabit the forlorn chamber on her own while she is in a state of pain and fury, and her own abandonment inside the bedroom reflects the state of the room itself.

  • Greetings, I am Mrs Fairfax the housekeeper of Thornfield Hall. I'd suppose you are here for Miss Adele?
  • During her time at Lowood, even with the poor conditions that mark her first years at the school, Janerelishes the opportunity to learn and thrives academically. She eventually becomes a teacher there, discovering purpose and meaning in teaching.

  • After teaching for two years, Jane yearns for new experiences. She accepts a governess position at a manor called Thornfield, where she teaches a lively French girl named Adèle. The distinguished housekeeper Mrs. Fairfax presides over the estate.
  • Jane is grateful for a good job, pleasant accommodations, and genial company. Adele has proved a good but not extraordinary pupil. Mrs. Fairfax is a pleasant but not extraordinary companion.
  • On her way back from a walk, she meets Mr Rochester for the first time. His horse slips on the ice and falls, and Jane has to help him. Still unaware of who he is, she is amazed on returning home to discover that the gentleman she met is in fact her employer.
