Storyboard Text

  • Fantasy literature takes place in worlds that never existed or could not be real, whether it is because of magic or other imaginary beings. Much fantasy takes place in worlds set in worlds similar to a medieval one, but that has changed over time.
  • Fantasy can take place in completely imaginary worlds, or worlds connected to our own, like the hidden world of Harry Potter. They often explore young people finding magic or fighting evil monsters
  • Fantasy allows teachers and students to explore issues in our own world in different settings. Issues like inequality, bullying, identity, and family can be explored in a context that is perhaps less threatening or political because it is in an imaginary world.
  • Unlike fantasy, science fiction, or speculative fiction, takes place in a world that could be if technology were a little different. This could include dystopias, aliens and space exploration, or even a futuristic past like steampunk.
  • Science fiction often explores issues like how new technologies might significantly change the world in the future. It also might explore how modern issues like climate change or government surveillance and how it would lead to a different world.
  • Similar fantasy, science fiction helps us think about our world by making plausible changes to it. Especially with younger readers who may have a harder time thinking abstractly, science fiction helps us imagine our world differently and how that would impact our lives.
