  • Hey mom I'm going to sleep under this tree tonight. It'll be fun!
  • No! Don't do it!! It's not good for you! That can be very dangerous!
  • But why Mom?
  • Trees make their own food using a process called photosynthesis. One of the things it needs is sunlight. But since it's nighttime, and there's no sun, trees will only go through respiration, which will produce carbon dioxide. The carbon dioxide can be very harmful to your body.
  • Respiration, like breathing?
  • No, it's cellular respiration, not breathing. There are two types of cellular respiration. Aerobic, which is more efficient and requires oxygen to make ATP(food) and anaerobic which doesn't require oxygen and may cause lactic acid.Aerobic respiration requires oxygen and glucose, however it produces water, carbon dioxide and ATP energy. Anaerobic respiration produces less energy and doesn't require oxygen, but instead makes lactic acid which isn't good for you.
  • Well, there are 3 stages. Glyclosis (anaerobic) is where glucose is broken down to form pyruvic acid. Next, in the Krebs Cycle, which is a series of chemical reactions, also known as the Citric Acid Cycle, and finally The Electron Transport Chain which shuffles from NADPH and FADH2 into molecular oxygen.
  • THE NEXT DAY
  • What is the actual process of respiration Mom?
  • Of course there is! There are two steps. In Light Dependent Reactions, energy from sunlight is absorbed by chlorophyll and converted into stored chemical energy, in the form of NADPH and ATP. In the Calvin Cycle, or Light Independent Reaction, the energized electrons and energy carrier molecules, provide energy to form carbohydrates from carbon dioxide molecules!
  • Is there a process like that for photosynthesis?
  • Exactly! Heterotrohps that are unable to produce their own food rely on the carbohydrates produced by photosynthetic organisms for their energy needs. Even when a predator preys on other animals, you have to remember that the animal got it's energy from plants, which got it's energy from photosynthesis and cellular respiration! This concept is very fascinating!
  • Wow! So photosynthesis and cellular respiration must be really important to all organisms!
