  • The Origins of the Aztecs
  • Tenochtitlan
  • Expansion of the Aztec Empire
  • There is no exact origins of the Aztecs but they were though to be a nomadic tribe from northern Mexico who settled in mesoamerica.
  • The arrival of the Spanish
  • The Aztecs started to build their empire and started by building the capital of Tenochtitlan. They saw an eagle with a snake in its beak on a cactus and saw it as a sign to build their settlement there.
  • Cortes vs Moctezuma
  • What the Aztec Spies think they saw
  • The Aztecs started to grow and expand. By the early 1500s, they had control of 500 small states and some 5 to 6 million people. Many people visited Tenochtitlan on market days to shop.
  • The Fall of the Aztec Empire
  • The First European in Mexican territory was Francisco Hernadez de Cordoba. He came with 3 ships and 100 men into Cuba and later left. The Spanish Governor, Diego Velasqez sent a much larger force after reading the reports from Cordoba. Hernan Cortez, who was leading the larger force, disobeyed Velasqez's orders and started training men. He took 400 men and a translator into Mexico and gained alliances with the controlled civilizations of the Aztecs.
  • When Cortes came to Tenochtitlan, they honored him. He resembled the legend, Quetzalcoatl. Also, before they though they saw signs of doom
  • What the Aztec Spies Actually saw
  • The Spainards easily took hostage Montezuma and other lords and gained control. It was said that the Spanish killed thousands. Cuauhtemoc, a nephew of Montezuma took back Tenochtitlan and supposing 240,000 people died.
