  • Living things are made out of cells. We know this because of cell theory.
  • What are living things made out of?
  • What is cell theory?
  • Cell theory is a theory that was created by a few scientists who used microscopes to determine that there are cells in all living things. There are three parts to cell theory.
  • Part one of cell theory says that all living things are made up of one or more cells.
  • Leeuwenhoek used a microscope and discovered bacteria which he called animalcules. Theodor Schwann came up with the theory that all animals have cells inside of them. Mathias Schleiden said that plants are made up of cells too.
  • Who discovered that?
  • John and Jane are in science class, and they are learning about biology. They have a question for the teacher.
  • The next part says the cell is the basic unit of structure and function in organisms. Robert Hooke came up with the term “cell” which scientists today use instead of animalcules.
  • Mrs. B starts to explain about cell theory.
  • The last part says all cells come from cells that already exist. Every cell can create new cells.
  • Mrs. B explains that there are many people who helped to create cell theory.
  • Let’s use our microscope to look at some cells.
  • Wow, that's really cool!
  • Mrs. B explains the second part of cell theory.
  • Donny and Johnny are learning a lot about science.
  • John and Jane want to experiment with everything they just learned.
