I hope you all enjoyed the field trip and learned a lot. Tomorrow we are going to learn about the different resources in the ocean.
In the 1980s, scientists became alarmed by the various types of trash being found on beaches. Different types of trash found were bandages, vials of blood, and other medical waste. The Enviromental Protection Agency (EPA) found that U.S hospitals were dumping medical waste into the ocean. As a result, marine life and people who were depended on marine life for food were negatively affected.
Another type of pollution in our oceans is oil. Oil spills occur when oil tankers break open and leak out oil. Oil is poisonous to plants and animals, and are very hard to clean up and the effects can last for a long time. In 1990 the U.S passed the Oil Pollution Act, which stated that all oil tankers that travel in the U.S must have 2 hulls. If the outer hull is damaged, the inner hull will prevent leaks. Big spills only cause 5% of the oil pollution. Okay guys that's all the notes for today and tommorow we will do a review and questions.
