Storyboard Text

  • This is Todd. Todd suffers from depression. But this doesn't stop Todd from living his life. Todd works on his depression by going to therapy and taking medication his psychiatrist describes. But Todd is dealing with a different problem today.
  • Todd lives in an environment where the stigma of mental illness is strong. People with mental disorders are viewed as irrational, and that their problems are in their heads. Thus, Todd is often left outcast or ostracized given that he is "mentally unhealthy" while the other townsfolk are mentally healthy.
  • We all have stuff going on, we don't need medication for it.
  • Most of the assumptions people had or made about mental health didn't really apply to what Todd was going through. Todd was more than capable of being rational and making wise decisions, he knew his problems weren't just "in his head". But he wasn't sure why he was discriminated by the mentally healthy. Little did Todd know, things were going to change radically for him.
  • Is he even rational enough to make his own decisions?
  • COVID-19 hits and everyone is tasked with social distancing. This was a very challenging time for many. Not only was it an epidemic that very few, if anybody, knew with certainty about, but it was an isolating time. Everyone had to stay indoors which meant very little socializing.
  • Stay six feet apart, indoors, and stay safe, please.
  • With everything going on because of the virus, mental health became much more of a focus and concern. People became a lot more empathetic of those with mental illnesses or disorders, and we made major strides in putting the stigma of mental illness on the decline. The effects of this were felt even as positive messages were broadcasted on the TV.
  • You matter, and you are great. And together, we all will get through these trying times.
  • COVID infection rates were dying down, the country was beginning to return to some sense of normalcy, and mental health awareness was still on the rise. Things were looking pretty good for Todd and others with mental disorders. Yet despite all that and the increasing quantity and blatant evidence against the common assumptions, some people still stigmatize the mentally unwell.
  • They're still crazy in my book. No matter how many pills they take.
  • Todd decided to do some research on the matter. He wanted to know why people would still willingly hold irrational beliefs despite being confronted about them and being presented with evidence that disproves their beliefs.
  • From his findings, Todd learned about biases, such as implicit and confirmation biases, and how we come to stigmatize by separation of preferred characteristics/traits and not, as well as other steps. Yet that still left his questions unanswered. Why would people who are shown to be incorrect in their beliefs, especially given how detrimental the stigmatization has been?
