- Hey mom is it alright if I hang out with some new friends after school?
- Sure Jacob have fun! Please be careful and stay out of trouble.
- Folkways
- Um I’m not sure how my mom would feel about that.
- Ok I guess.
- Hey, we’re skipping school and you better be in.
- Who cares she wont find out so you won’t get in trouble.
- Mores
- That’s not true I am at school.
- JACOB where are you I was told you skipped school?!
- Jacob would never do this!
- I am worried!
- Hello, we are calling to inform you that Jacob didn’t attend school today.
- Jacob is a 15 year old who recently moved to a new school. He is meeting new people and wanting to fit in. He is very close to his mom and has always stayed out of trouble. Jacob is naive and has never been exposed to bad influences.
- Taboos
- Where are they going?
- Folkways are everyday norms shared by society. If they are not followed there are usually no punishments. Attending school, dressing appropriately, and raising a hand to participate are common folkways. Missing the odd day is bad but it wont have long term consequences. Jacob is going against this norm to gain popularity.
- Laws
- Glad you two are back. I think it’s time we have some real fun. I have drugs!
- Mores are social norms that decide what is considered acceptable within a culture. People feel strongly about them but the consequences aren’t severe. They consist more of behaviours rather than actions. Examples include lying, cheating, bullying etc. Jacob is lying to his mom which doesn’t have any legal punishments however it will compromise the trust in their relationship.
- Life Lessons
- I am very disappointed in you. All I want is a bright future for you.
- You better not be lying.
- Taboos are activities that are forbidden in a society based upon beliefs that it is morally unacceptable. An example that is looked at around the world is young people having sex or premarital sex. Many religions around the world have major issues with this. In North America it’s more just a concern about teen pregnancies or babies not having a stable family. The consequences can range between imprisonment or just embarrassment and life changes. Jacob is being exposed to sex which he has not thought much about or become aware of the possible outcomes
- They’re just having sex. We can go play video games in the meantime.
- OMG
- Laws are the most serious norms that are in-forced by the government and if broken jail time can be applied. Drug use is a common crime that many people go to jail for. It is against the law because it ruins people’s life’s, causes homelessness, creates violence etc. This is something Jacob is aware of but he is letting the peer pressure get to him. He tells himself it will be a onetime thing but that is how some addictions start.
- This is crazy. I don’t want to but I want to be cool and fit in.
- Yes this is so cool!
- Sure…
- Jacob learned a few things this day. Just because some actions don’t have severe consequences doesn’t mean it is accepted as okay. He just risked his future over trying to fit in and he should pick better friends. Lastly it is not worth putting yourself at risk just to fit in with certain groups. Jacob saw many bad events today and luckily he was never caught with the drugs. The only consequences he will face is gaining his mothers trust again and accept whatever punishment she gives.
- I know, I didn’t consider the possible consequences.
