Storyboard Text

  • Close your eyes and they'll go away. - Dad
  • Mice = poverty. They can't really go away without help or a miracle.
  • Alicia's mom is sorry that Alicia had to be the one to step up and care for her family when she died. Her mother knows that all she could ever really offer was help with stereotypically "woman's duties". Her mother's sad and short fate is the reason why Alicia is going to school. This is why Esperanza mention's the mother's rolling pin and, I'm assuming, the father's factory job. She wants a better life than her parents had and she wants to beat cultural and gender norms. She wants to prove everyone wrong, including her father.
  • "I'm sorry there is no one older to rise and make the lunchbox toritillas."
  • Alicia is open to making the changes necessary to go to school and have a different outcome than her parents. She's willing to go the extra distance to break the cycle imposed on her, similar to Esperanza. She's determined to prove to her father that she's more than a maid and her methods of transportation symbolize how far she's willing to go. Especially because she only has time for school work when she's supposed to be asleep.
  • I couldn't find a tortilla or a rolling pin
