This is Jamaica in 1831. At this time, Jamaica was colonized by the British, but most of the dark skinned people in Jamaica were slaves. The slaves were treated harshly and felt powerless. Most were uneducated and few have seen anything but their masters plantation. The slaves decided to put an end to their suffering and started to protest against slavery.
On the night of December 27, 1831, fires filled the plantation houses as an act of rebellion from the slaves. This wouldn't end the rebellion, the rebels and the British colonizers fought and only 14 British died, while up to 500 rebels were killed or executed.
Some important people involved in the revolution were those involved in "the business". "The business" was a group of slaves that helped the rebels in the revolution plot against slavery.
My name is Thomas Dove and I am one of Sharpe's lieutenants. I am one of the fiercest fighters against the British militia once the rebellion moved into a less peaceful phase.
My name is Samuel Sharpe, and I am the chief conspirator of "the business". I am enslaved, Baptist, and a pacifist. I am one of the few enslaved who are literate and I used the New Testament to help the enslaved believe in freedom.
My name is Robert Gardiner. I am also one of Sharpe's lieutenants and am a fighter for the rebellion in the less pacifist phase, against the militia.
The Jamaican Revolution has impacted many things. The revolution helped influence the decision of the debate to dismantle slavery in British-colonized Caribbean. Unfortunately, the rebellion resulted in many enslaved men and women executed as a result of the trials. Multiple property damage occurred from the thousands of rebels setting fire to more than 100 properties, destroying many sugar works, and the houses of nearly 100 planters.
Sadly, in the end the rebels were defeated to the British. This is because of the pacifist era, resulting in the number of whites being killed are way lower than the number of slaves being killed. Fortunately , the rebellion wasn't for nothing and in 1838 slavery was abolished and many years later in 1962, Jamaica becomes an independent country. So in the end, even though the slaves of Jamaica didn't win the revolution, their goals were still met and they gained independence and freedom.
