Memnon

- Memnon, one day conceive the plan of being perfectly wise. Having thus made his little plan of wisdom in his room, Memnon put his head out the window.
- He saw two women walking under some plane tree near his house. One was old and seemed to be thinking of nothing. The other was young and pretty and seemed to be much preoccupied. He went down, he accosted the Ninevite, designing to console her with wisdom. Memnon did not hesitate to follow her in order to examine her affairs wisely and give her good counsel.
- The lady took him into a perfumed room and had him sit down with her politely. The lady spoke, her remarks were full of tenderness. Memnon took her affairs very much to heart. Memnon advise her so closely and gave her counsels so tender. As they were at this point, uncle entered armed from head to foot. Memnon was obliged to give all he had.
- Memnon, ashamed and in despair went back home; there he found a note inviting him to dinner with some of his intimate friends.
- He goes to the rendezvous; they find him a bit gloomy. They get him to drik to dissipate his sadness. He sleeps off the wine a bit. He sends his valet to get money to pay his intimate friends; they told him that that morning his debtor manage a fraudulent bankruptcy.
- Out of patience, he goes to the court with a plaster over his eye and a petition in his hand to ask the King for justice against the bankrupt. He kissed the ground three times and presented his petition. They had laughed at him.
