  • 4. Yes, I didn't either, I was so surprised to hear that the mentally ill were living in such horrible conditions. I believe they deserve better places to live.
  • 1. I am Dorothea Dix and I first saw the horrible conditions of jails when I took a job as a Sunday School teacher in a jail here in Massachusetts.
  • 4. These people have no way to pay their debt because they are in prison. It simply doesn't make sense.
  • 2. I soon realized that many of these people had been put in jail for minor offenses.
  • 5. I have now visited hundreds of jails and witnessed people being beaten and abused with no way to escape.
  • 3. As I visited more prisons I realized that there were also many people there that were mentally ill or owed debt.
  • 1. I quickly decided that something had to be done to help these people.
  • 4. Recently I have been informing the public of my finding with speeches like these.
  • 2. As I visited more jails I realized that this kind of horrible treatment was very common.
  • 6. Yes, we are very interested in what you are doing. Could we arrange a time to meet?

  • 3. So, I have been gathering information for two years. I have arranged to present my detailed report to the state legislature next week.

  • 4. Now, the mentally ill are no longer in prisons with horrible conditions and are receiving treatment.
  • 2. Yes, let me tell you about the meeting with the Massachusetts state legislature.
  • 5. The other great thing is that these asylums are public so everyone has access to them.
  • 3. When I told them of my findings they were shocked and quickly agreed to create several public asylums for the mentally ill.
