Adelia didn't try to leave again. She was sitting in front of a mirror one night- the candles were suddenly extinguished and a madwomen materalised behind her and tried to strangle her-telling her to go-the grip felt cold and solid, however, when she finally lit a candle -no one was there-only the upturned chair, broken vase and her own terrified face reflected in the mirror
Stop! Please! Mercy! I beg of you ! I cannot go!
No, no- I don’t know what I see, what I don't see — what I don’t fear, what I fear, nor what is forgery and what is truth!
She continues to be haunted by 3 ghosts of madwomen-hear them walking, scratching, howling, and she is extremely disturbed as she doesn't know if what she sees is real and that the house is actually moving. She loses her grip on sanity, (memory lapses, extreme emotions) but finds herself unable to part with the castle.
Several days later, she was feeling very good- decided to go for a walk despite that it was pouring- when she reached a lake behind the house- she heard her mother's voice telling her to come-she follows in the direction of the voice- walks straight into the lake-has one moment of clarity: thinkswhat am I doing? before she drowns herself and sinks
Mother! Indeed, I am coming! Mother! Where are you?
At the moment when water filled her lungs-the castle seemed to sigh and budge-one more rose window, more dazzling and intricate than the previous 3, appeared in the center of the castle. The sun came out -penetrating the rose windows, scattering tainted beams of light on the ground-beautiful but eerie. Castle again waited patiently on the hill with it's round windows staring like gaping eyes
