  • "And Moishe the Beadle, the poorest of the poor of Sighet, spoke to me for hours on end about the Kabbalah's revelations and its mysteries" (pg. 5).
  • Elie meets Moishe after escaping his captors for several months and describes how the deportation trains were handed over to the Gestapo. The Jews were forced to dig mass graves for themselves and were slaughtered by the Gestapo there, he explains. The town rejects him as crazy.
  • Summary/theme quote: "We never ate enough tosatisfy our hunger. Our principle was to economize, to save fortomorrow. Tomorrow could be worse yet" (pg. 23)
  • The Hungarian government is taken over by the Fascists. Germans quickly invade Sighet. The Jews are subjected to a succession of progressively oppressive tactics, including the arrest of community leaders, confiscation of property, and the enforcement of yellow stars. The Jews are eventually confined to small ghettos, where they are crammed into tight alleys behind barbed-wire walls.
  • "Hungarian police had entered the ghetto and were yelling in the street nearby. 'All Jews, outside! Hurry!" They were followed by Jewish police, who, their voices breaking, told us"The time has come... you must leave all this ...' (pg. 16).
  • "Another scream jolted us. The woman had broken free of her bonds and was shouting louder than before: 'Look at the fire! Look at the flames! Flames everywhere...' Once again, the young men bound and gagged her. When they actually struck her, people shouted their approval: 'Keep her quiet! Make that madwoman shut up." (pg. 26).
  • In the darkness outside the train, Madame Schächter starts screaming that she sees a fire. She frightens the Jews in the car despite the fact that there is no fire visible. They console themselves, by believing Madame Schächter is insane. She is restrained and unable to scream since she is bound and gagged. Her child cries watching. Madame Schächter screams about the furnace that awaits them, but she is beaten to silence.
