Storyboard Text

  • Let's take a walk as I tell you about Bacillus anthracis or as it is more widely known, Anthrax. Anthrax is a nasty disease that can be inhaled, ingested, or picked up through the skin.
  • The inhaled form of anthrax is harder to treat and can be fatal.
  • Ingested
  • Anthrax is the disease most likely to be used in a bioterrorist attack. It is considered a Tier 1 agent, which means that there is a good chance it could be used and result in many fatalities.
  • Inhaled
  • Contact with Open Wound
  • Anthrax is spread by breathing in spores that were dispersed in the air, such as an aerosol can; eating meat from an animal that was sick; or having a cut come in contact with the spores.
  • It can be easily found in our surroundings or lab-created. The spores are so small they can be used undetected in our everyday products.
  • Anthrax is rare in the U.S. It is most commonly found in countries that don't vaccinate their animals, such as areas of Central and South America, Europe, and the Caribbean.
  • Stage 1 Flu-like symptoms, sore throat, painful swallowing, mild fever, fatigue, muscle aches, mild chest pain, shortness of breath, and nausea.
  • Stage 2 Internal hemorrhaging and decaying tissue.
  • If you become exposed, you have 1 to 6 day to begin a 60-day cycle of antibiotics. Anthrax is in your system and can become active within 60 days. You would want to follow the same procedure if there is a chance you could become exposed.
  • Workers may qualify for the vaccine if: • they work with the disease • handle animals or animal products • member of the military
  • There is a vaccine for anthrax, but it is not for the public. It is only used for people that are in certain jobs or in the case of emergency, such as an attack.
  • WARNING: Vaccine is not to be used by pregnant women.
  • Most people are familiar with this disease from the attacks that happened in 2001, just after 9/11. Letters containing anthrax spores were sent to media and members of Congress through the U.S. Post Office. Five people died and 17 other people were infected.
  • Thank you for walking with me. I hope you enjoyed our walk and learned more about anthrax.
