Storyboard Description

The story of John Smith and his family who are sharecroppers.

Storyboard Text

  • Hi, my name is John Smith and I am a sharecropper here in Lauderdale County, Alabama.
  • These are my children, Henry and Mary who help me in the fields to support our lifestyle.
  • Hi, my name is Lauren Smith and I am a teacher and I am married to John Smith.
  • Mrs. Smith
  • I am not a happy and fair man!
  • And this is my boss, Mr. Bill who is a very happy and fair man.
  • This is the Smith family farm and they work as sharecroppers for Mr. Bill.
  • These will do just fine.
  • The kids are reluctant to get to work yet they know it is essential to survive.
  • You are under arrest!
  • Lauren works in a secret school for African American children right on the outskirts of town and is very adamant about education.
  • Please lord forgive me of my sins.
  • Mr. Bill is the richest man in town and also the stingiest. John has to be kind to Mr. Bill so that he can continue to live in his cabin and tend to his fields.
  • You owe me double the crop!
  • Lauren decided to steal some books from Mr. Bill's local book store to teach her kids how to read. She is not allowed to buy books even if she had the money. The only way for her to educate her kids is to steal.
  • Mr. Bill rightfully accuses Lauren of stealing books from his store and she is arrested.
  • Lauren is thrown in jail. She starts to cry out to God for forgiveness and begs for mercy.
  • Don't think this changes anything!
  • Mr. Bill confronts John about his wife's crimes. Mr. Bill feels betrayed and embarrassed to be associated with the Smiths and therefore wants double the harvest of cotton.
  • Give it to God!
  • Other African Americans families in the community hear about John's situation and came to help. When times are tough the community must come together as one to stand up for what is right.
  • John is astonished to see all of the work that was accomplished with the help of his community.
  • John shows Mr. Bill all that he has harvested. Mr. Bill is still angry about the stolen books yet is also pleased with the harvest.
  • Lauren is eventually released from jail after 6 months because Mr. Bill has elected to give her another chance.
  • The family is reunited at last.
  • Lauren was able to hide the books before she went to jail so she retrieved them from their hiding place.
  • Lauren secretly teaches her children reading skills in hopes that they will get out of sharecropping.
  • Mary and Henry eventually grew up and got jobs in the town where they are no longer sharecroppers. Their success has been inspiring to the rest of the African American community. It would not have been possible without the sacrifices from their parents.
