  • Nonetheless ,they still produce radiation, Does that make them dangerous? Should the people be concerned?
  • Really?
  • There’s no need for the people to be concerned. I am aware of radiation’s negative connotations and how most people associate it with atomic bombs and nuclear disasters but microwave radiation is the 2nd least harmful radiation to humans according to the electromagnetic spectrum. Microwaves are nearly similar to radio waves where in both of them aren’t harmful to humans compared to other types of radiation.
  • Well, isn’t that comforting to know. Glad to know that exposure to microwave radiation does not result to us having intestinal cancer.
  • Yes, in fact light is also electromagnetic radiation and it does not cause any ailment to people which means not all radiation can be dangerous to human health. On top of that, microwave ovens have metal shields and metal screens over the window that prevent the radiation from leaving the oven to avoid hazards and risks as microwaves are able to pass through glass, paper, plastic and other similar materials.
  • That really is good to know. However can using microwave ovens harm us in other ways? We have already debunked that rumor but are there other instances where using microwave ovens can be dangerous?
  • Well, yes, there are instances when using microwave ovens can cause harm on humans. There have been rare cases where people have experience burns because of microwave radiation but most of these cases involve improper use or maintenance. We use microwave ovens to heat up our food and if we get exposed to it, it may heat up our skin tissue the same way it does to our food. Hence, it is important that we must use them with caution and care. If need be, have your microwave checked every once in a while to avoid any risk or future accidents.
  • So what I get from this is that using microwave ovens DOES NOT cause intestinal cancer and the radiation coming from it is not really deadly to humans. The radiation it emits is different from other types of radiation that damage cells and cause cancer.
  • Correct. But, that does not mean it can’t cause mild injuries. All things have its advantage and disadvantage, of course. If one is not careful and operates microwave ovens recklessly and irresponsibly, injuries and accidents would happen. That’s why it is very important for us to be responsible and cautious. Microwave ovens are safe to use when it is used properly and accordingly.
  • Thank you so much for all that information, Dr. Aliviado. Now I hope that public would be more aware of the pros and cons of using microwave ovens. Remember, it does not cause the development of cancer cells and from what we had here, there has been no scientific proof that it does.
  • Well, this has been a very informative lesson and we hope you took something from it.
  • However, we should know that we still have to use it properly in order to avoid any disasters.
  • And this is The Louisian Chatroom!!
  • And I am Ciana Joreyce Arcilla with out guest for today, Dr. Brylle Aliviado.
  • We’d leave it at that but don’t forget to tune in to next week’s episode where we talk about UV rays and how it affects the human body. I am your host Ashton Michael Bingcoleta.
