  • In his story Harrison Bergeron, Kurt Vonnegut makes the point that total equality is not freedom, instead it is quite the opposite. The lowest in society are not raised up, rather, the highest are brought down. Society is only as strong as the lowest within it. The ballerinas, rather than providing a beautiful show for the enjoyment of the audience, preform poorly to not show off. They wear masks to hide their God-given beauty, and shackles to prevent them from being light on their feet. None of this really matters however, as the audience will forget what they had just seen within minutes. The audience sits numbly in front of the TV, experiencing emotions for only a brief moment. Following the death of the main characters' son, they grieve for only a few seconds, before completely forgetting why they were crying. They are robbed of the human experience. Mankind has been robbed of happiness and sadness, beauty and ugliness, and engagement and boredom. The complexity and depth of life has been removed, replaced with a numb, mindless existence. I believe that the point of the story is that our differences should not be considered a bad thing. All people are different, and there is nothing bad about that.
