- Meeting of the Estates General
- In France, one tenth of people that have enough food die of indigestion. Nine tenths of other people die from hunger because they have no food.
- National Assembly; the Tennis Court Oath
- "To never separate and to meet wherever the circumstances might require until we have established a sound and just constitution."
- France's debt led Louis XVI (16th) to make new taxes and to reduce privileges.
- Storming of the Bastille
- A general assembly representing the French estates; the clergy, the nobles and the bourgeoisie. The third estate formed into a national assembly inviting the other two to join, against the king's wishes.
- On June 17, 1789 the third estate started to call themselves the National Assembly. On June 20, they got locked out of their meeting so they moved to an indoor tennis court and took the tennis court oath.
- In Paris, France many people were angry about having very little bread. On July 14, 1789 they got a hold of some weapons, and went to a political prison named Bastille, and killed the guards. They all freed the people who were held in the prison and began to break apart the prison with their bare hands and a few cannons.
