- Clarence Gideon was only in 9th grade when he ran away from home. This left him with no money, education, or hope for the future.

- Gideon turned to life of crime and stole money, beer and wine from a store where he eventually got caught. Gideon was poor and had been in jail 4 times already.
- Gideon was denied a lawyer to defend him in his case. Gideon was outraged and knew it was against his rights.
- That is outrageous!
- You will not be given a lawyer for your case. You must represent yourself
- The Florida supreme court decided to not hear Gideon's petition against Florida for not giving him a lawyer in his case.

- Does the Sixth Amendment's right to counsel in criminal cases extend to felony defendants in state courts?
- The case got to the supreme court and they ruled that the 6th amendment was violated and Gideon did not have a fair and equal trial and should've been given a lawyer.
- I think everyone in this room agrees that the 6th amendment was violated.
- Because of Gideon, felons can get representation whenever they need!
