Feudalism is the dominant social system in medieval Europe. The nobles had land given to them by the Crown in exchange for military service. Vassals were tenants of the nobles. Lastly, peasants (villeins or serfs) were forced to live on their lord's land to do labor and share produce from farming. Other classes worked for nobility in exchange for military protection. An example of Feudalism is during the Viking era. During this time, nobility held the land and peasants and vessels worked for them in exchange for protection from Muslim invaders.
Oligarchy
Republics were founded on the idea that power rests with the people. However, some people were excluded and included based on race, gender and wealth. Republics are a form of government where a state is ruled by representatives of the citizen body. Modern Republics are like the United States government where the power is given to the people through a voting system. In a republic, not everyone has equal rights as some deal with descrimination and poverty. We also see this happen in the United States.
