  • Hannah is the person who the story is mainly about. The tapes are told from her perspective and each tape is a reason why she eventually committed suicide. Each tape is a message to the person on how they hurt her. Hannah is a very complex and emotional character who changes drastically throughout the novel.
  • Clay is the main protagonist of the story and we listen to the tapes through his perspective. Clay is a very smart and straight laced kid who is very well liked kid by everyone he has a huge crush on Hannah. His tape was not what he did to Hannah but more what he didn't do. He could've helped her and instead he did nothing.
  • Justin is a popular kid who gets a lot of girls and was Hannah's first kiss. His first tape was when he let a rumor spread that they did more than just kiss, which gave Hannah a reputation that she could never recover from. He had a second tape where he let Jessica be raped by Bryce.
  • Alex is a new kid in town just like Hannah who hangs out with Hannah and Jessica at Monet's at the beginning of the year. His tape is about how he created a hot or not list to get at Jessica and he lists Hannah as having the best ass in the freshman class. This was important because it hurt Hannah's reputation even more and led to her being harassed at the Blue Spot.
  • Jessica is a very fun loving and outgoing girl who gets involved in a lot of drama. Her tape is about how she abandoned Hannah and stopped trusting her. She slapped her because he was jealous about Alex's list even though this had nothing to do with her. This hurt Hannah because she was really her only friend and now that was gone.
  • Tyler is a very weird and nerdy kid who doesn't have a lot of friends. He is the photographer for the yearbook. His tape is about how he stalked Hannah and took pictures of her when she was in her room by herself this was so devastating because it was the last place that she didn't have to worry.
  • Courtney Crimson is a very popular and pretty girl who does everything in her power to make people like her. Her tape is about how she tried to make Hannah be her friend even though she really didn't like her. This hurt her because she didn't really have a lot of friends and thought maybe they could be friends.
  • Marcus is a very well liked kid who is generally very funny and people have fun around. His tape is about how he asked Hannah is out on a date and then didn't show up on time and made her wait. After he got there and they started having fun and he tried to feel her up even though she didn't want him to.
  • Zach is a quiet and athletic kid. His tape is about how he got rejected by Hannah right after Marcus left. He was so upset by this that he stole all of the compliments in Hannah's bag in peer communications. This hurt her so much because she was having a really hard time already and those compliments had kept her going.
  • Ryan is somewhat of a social outcast who has some different interests. He runs a magazine called the lost and found. Ryan's tape was about how he betrayed her after they were writing poetry together. Hannah opened her soul to him and he put it in his magazine when she didn't want him too. This hurt her because it was very personal then everyone in the school was talking about her.
  • Jenny Kurtz is a cheerleader who helps Hannah for her Valentines day survey. Her tape was about how she drove home drunk knocked over a stop sign and wasn't willing to report it. This tape represents the butterfly effect because that one seemingly innocent mistakes led to a car crash that killed a kid.
  • Bryce is an evil human being that is absolutely terrible and is the most simple character in the entire book. His tape is about how he rapes Jessica at a party, which emotionally scarred Hannah. His second tape is when Hannah gives up and lets Bryce have his way with her, that is when she was officially done.
  • Mr. Porter was an English teacher and a new guidance counselor. He was well meaning but extremely incompetent. His tape is about how Hannah gave life one last chance by talking to him about what happened but instead of giving her solutions he tells her to get over it.
  • Skye was a minor character who represents regret for Clay. She was his crush in 8th grade but she changed a lot. At the end of the book Clay talks to her to avoid what happened to Hannah happening to Skye.
  • Tony is a very trustworthy guy who Hannah gave the second set of tapes. He helps Clay along when he is going through his tape. He also helps Hannah out by making sure everyone gets the tapes. He represents stability in the novel.
