  • ThePeople in Russia started the February Revolution, abdicating Nicholas II and ending the Romanov Dynasty . The Duma established a Provisional Government to rule.
  • In February, the Red Army was officially formed by the Bolsheviks to fight the rebellious “White Army”, and Leon Trotsky was appointed the war commissar. In March, in order to focus on the Civil War between Reds and Whites and to stop German Invasion, Lenin signed the Treaty of Brest-Litovsk where Russia exited WWI

  • With the leadership of Trotsky and organization by Josef Stalin, the Red Army ended winning the five-year Civil War in 1922.

  • In 1922, the USSR (Union of Soviet Socialist Republics) was officially established. Vladimir was the first leader, but then suffered a stroke and died in 1924. His successor, formerly the General Secretary, was Joseph Stalin. Although Lenin disapproved Stalin becoming the next president, Stalin was able to take over co-leadership of the Soviet Union with Grigoru Zinovyev snd Lev Kamenev. Then, he edged them out of power and exiled Trotsky when he established his dictatorship. Next, he gained complete power using propaganda.
