  • Battle of Trenton
  • Morale in the Continental Army was low in late 1776, following losses at the Battle of White Plains in October and Forts Washington and Lee in November. General Washington withdrew across New Jersey and into Pennsylvania, pursued by the British. His army was down to a few thousand soldiers, many of whom wore tattered uniforms and lacked shoes, and enlistments were about to expire. The soldiers were gathered along the western banks of the Delaware River by December, with the river and winter weather aiding in keeping the British at bay. The American Crisis by Thomas Paine was shared around campfires, reigniting a love for the revolutionary cause and helping to keep the troops' spirits and determination up.
  • General John Burgoyne was the British commander-in-chief. "Gentleman Johnny" was his moniker. Major General Horatio Gates, as well as Generals Benedict Arnold and Benjamin Lincoln, commanded the Americans. Colonel Daniel Morgan and General Enoch Poor were two more important leaders. General Burgoyne, a British general, devised a strategy to destroy the American colonies. Along the Hudson River, he planned to divide the colonies in half.

  • Winter at Valley Forge
  • For a variety of reasons, George Washington chose Valley Forge for winter storage. Initially, the British spent their winters around Philadelphia. He'd be able to keep an eye on the British while also protecting the Pennsylvanians. At the same time, he was far enough away from the British that if they wanted to strike, he would have had plenty of notice. When the troops came under attack, Valley Forge was a suitable spot to protect yourself. Mount Joy and Mount Misery have high places where defenses might be constructed. The Schuylkill River, in the north, also acted as a barrier.
  • The American Continental Army in the South had been taken over by General Nathanael Greene. The war in the South had not been going well before to General Greene's leadership, but Greene used several innovative tactics that permitted American wins and forced the British Army to retire to the East Coast. General George Washington was moving his army south from the north at the same time as the British Army under General Charles Cornwallis was withdrawing to Yorktown. After defeating the British Navy, the French Navy began to deploy on the shore near Yorktown as well.
