- After lunch, my mother lay down for siesta while I pretended to nap into the weave of the mat. When she began to snore softly, I crept out of the house.
- Z Z Z Z Z ZZZ
- Aha! I can finally go out
- As I stepped outside, I noticed the sparse grass growing near the wall wobbled in a haze. When I tried to touch it, my hand went through and touched the wall. It swallowed my hand, my arm, my head, and I found myself into the garden next door.
- Oh no! The wall disappeared. How can I go back to my house now?!
- Something scaly brushed against me and whispered in my ear.
- HAHAHAHAToo small to be a tasty morsel...
- You are smaller than I thought, Milton.
- I recognize the laugh at once...
- I'm not small!
- I looked at the apartment that share wall with ours. The creature led me inside. Despite my fright, the temptation was too great, so I scanned every room in every floor. When I saw my mother looking for me in her garden, I went back home.
- My mother punished me by not giving me any supper. So I was hungry by midnight.
- Let me continue your Aunt Hilda's story about the green girl. She lived until she was nine years old. They succeeded, you know, in washing away the green from her.
- Because you would run from me, like you did, this afternoon
- The same way you got into my garden
- They did? How?
- Why did you not do so before?

- An old woman helped them. She brought many candles, a bag of ash, a washcloth she wiped the girl with, and a basin of clay where the water slowly turned green. They emptied the basin in the garden where it grew the most splendid plants, but as the garden grew, the girl weakened and grew paler until she breathed her last and disappeared altogether. Her parents moved away, but burned the garden first using most of their furniture.
- Will you love me, Milton?
- I am the green that had been washed out of her, and I am no longer green. I have grown wild and unwieldy, hungry and unloved.
- The creature, its shadow, dissolved before my eyes
