The End
Life in France during the 1780s for the common people was very hard. They were ruled by King Louis. He believed in divine rule, which means he had the ultimate power over how the country was governed. Life for the commoners was very difficult they got paid very less and they were treated unfairly. The turmoil during this time led to the worst financial crisis and caused a lot of change in France!
King Louis realized the financial crisis in Fance and called for the Estate General to meet. The Estates General was a representative assembly made up of first estate (priests and clergy), second estate (royal family and nobles) and the third estate (mostly peasants). This was more of forced divine rule and was not a step towards democracy.
The third Estate broke from the Estate General and formed the National Assembly. On June 10, 1789 members of the Third State took the act of the Tennis Court Oath. Their goals were to make things fair in the third Estate. People were fighting for their rights, so this was a step towards democracy.
On July 14, 1789, at an old fortress jail in Bastille, an angry mob of people stormed in to protest against King Louis and the Estates. Finally, King Louis was forced to recognize the National Assembly. This became the start of the French Revolution! People took action to protect their freedom, and this started to move them towards democracy.
In October of 1789 angry women marched to the Versailles Palace and demanded bread from King Louis. They pointed out how unfair it was that their family did not even have food to eat, yet the King and his family lived in a palace. They captured him and took him back to Paris. He never returned to Versailles. This movement definitely sparked the rise of democracy.
King Louis was forced to give up his rights and allow the elected assembly to make laws by signing Declaration of the Rights of Man. In the summer of 1792, France ended the Monarchy. In Jan of 1793, because of their acts of treason, King Louis was beheaded, and Queen Marie was in Sept. This was a period of reign of terror which Maximillian Robespierre led. Third Estate killed many upper classes people. This was a cruel way to get towards democracy.
By the end of Robespierre's terror reign, the youngest general called Napolean Bonaparte led a successful military that changed the course of history. By Dec 2, 1804, he crowned himself as emperor of France. He believed people should be treated equally before the law. These were positive signs leaning towards democracy, but at times Napolean did not like freedom of speech if it was against him. This did not fully support ideas of democracy.
The French Revolution in France that began with the Estates General in 1789 and ended with the formation of the French Consulate in November 1799. Many of its ideas are considered fundamental principles of liberal democracy. Their moto became liberty, equality and fraternity.
