- Isaac was a field slave that worked on a cotton plantation. He was often scolded by his owner because of his inefficient work.
- I'm sorry master it won't happen again I promise!
- You better do this right and quickly before I whip you for the fourth time this week!
- Isaac had an old friend whos been working at the plantation for many years. He's heard of stories about the drinking gourd that led to freedom and tells Isaac.
- I'm too old to escape but you're still young. I've heard stories about the drinking gourd. If you follow this it would lead you to the north where there is no slavery.
- Hey old man, I'm so sick and tired of working here, I would do anything to get out of this place.
- Isaac's old friend tells him about the Drinking Gourd song that was made as a way to relay escape instructions.
- “Follow the drinkin’ gourd Well the river bank makes a mighty good road Dead trees will show you the way Left foot, peg foot, travelin’ on Follow the drinkin’ gourd”
