- We have a problem,most of the fish here are over fished!
- Did I hear there was a problem? Sea Girl is here!
- Wow! Where did you come from? I hope you're here to help.
- Yes I am here to share ways that will help with specific problems due to over fishing.
- Ok! Over fishing is causing many problems such as damaging the coral reef.
- There are some ways to fix that problem that I can share with you.
- Lets call some more people over so they can hear!
- When you over fish it does cause damage to coral reefs and coral reefs are essential to ocean life. Did you know once these are damaged they are hard to repair?
- One way to stop this damage is to set up more protected areas in the ocean. Now let's look at other ways over fishing is creating problems.
- Right and there are plenty of communities that rely on fish as their primary food source. Over fishing threatens their population.
- Hey! Look there is a fishing boat.
- The solution to this is to practice sustainable fishing which many cultures have done for thousands of years.
- I think another problem of over fishing is when dolphins or turtles get caught in fisherman's nets.
- That's exactly correct! Unintended catches that do not get used for food. Do any of you have a solution for this?
- I think if fishing gear was modified so fewer animals and fish that are not being targeted are not caught that would help.
- That is absolutely the correct solution!
- One additional problem of over fishing is the growth of algae. If algae is allowed to grow freely it can cause major damage to marine life.
- Working with the government to set specific regulations and policy around the fishing industry is just one more way to reduce the problem of over fishing.
