  • Campylobacter Infection In canines
  • Slide: 3
  • campylobacter can cause a serious diarrheal illness in humans called campylobacteriosis.
  • Slide: 4
  • Campylobacter can be transmitted to humans in many ways and one of those ways is through ingestion of contaminated feces of canines. The campylobacter bacteria can often cause illness to the dog, but most can act as carriers and spread it to other dogs and humans.
  • Slide: 5
  • campylobacter bacteria infects the digestive system
  • it can navigate the acidity of the stomach and uses its shape and flagella to penetrate the mucus of the gastrointestinal tract
  • Slide: 6
  • Campylobacter is a gram-negative bacterium that is very motile. They are generally 's' shaped or curved with unipolar or bipolar flagella.
  • Slide: 7
  • Campylobacter infections have been found to cause secondary immunological problems.
  • Campylobacter can be associated with specific immunodeficiency and auto immune conditions like primary hypogammaglobulinemia and Guillain-Barré Syndrome.
  • Slide: 8
  • Campylobacter can cause a number of symptoms like bloody diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, and vomiting.
  • Slide: 9
  • several species of campylobacter are human pathogens. The major pathogens are C. jejuni, C. coli, C. fetus, C. upsaliensis, and C. lari
  • Slide: 10
  • Campylobacter bacteria colonize the small and large intestines, causing inflammatory diarrhea and fever. The stool of someone infected can contain leukocytes and blood. C. jejuni antigens can cross react with one or more neural structure which can be the cause for secondary immunological problems to occur. Campylobacter has several virulence factors that play a role in its pathogenesis like cellular motility, bacterial adhesion, invasion into host cell, and toxin formation. Some campylobacter infections can resolve on their own but it's important to stay hydrated and may be necessary to use oral rehydration solutions. In severe cases, antibiotics may be needed to treat infection. Some antibiotics that can be used are Azithromycin, Ciprofloxacin, and Erythromycin.
