- Text To Text Connection: I can connect Totally Joe to a book called Egghead. Joe and Will are both the main protagonists, and are both bullied. Although they are bullied for different reasons, the nature of the bullying is pretty similar.
- Bert and Ernie? That is SO gay
- Text To World Connection: In Totally Joe, Joe is being bullied. Sadly, this isn't surprising, since LGBTQ+ youth are 2 to 3 times more likely to be bullied, and 2 to 3 times more likely to commit suicide, compared to other teens and youth their age.
- Emotional Triggers: Whilst I was reading the section where the boys were bullying Colin and Joe, I felt pretty angry. The book felt very realistic and thats upsetting. The world is so full of hate and prejudice, for no reason at all.
- In this section I think the author was trying to show that some people don't have the privilege of loving who they want without being despised and ridiculed. Colin and Joe couldn't even hold hands in public without being bullied, even though holding hands is hardly affection at all.
